What Is MK-677 (Ibutamoren)?
MK-677, also known as Ibutamoren or Nutrobal, is an orally active, non-peptide ghrelin receptor agonist that stimulates growth hormone (GH) secretion and elevates insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) levels. Unlike peptide-based GH secretagogues that require injection, MK-677 is orally bioavailable and maintains elevated GH/IGF-1 levels for up to 24 hours per dose — making it exceptionally practical for longitudinal laboratory research designs.
First developed as an investigational compound for muscle-wasting conditions and growth hormone deficiency, MK-677 has been studied in multiple human Phase 1 and Phase 2 trials. Research has demonstrated dose-dependent increases in IGF-1 of 40–89%, improvements in sleep architecture (particularly REM duration), and potential benefits in bone mineral density and lean body mass — all without significant cortisol elevation.
